Strong Angel Linux distro. Zope - application server Plone - content management, runs on Zope OIO - flexible data collection and reporting, runs on Zope [StrongAngel.OIO] PostgreSQL - relational database Kernel - 2.6.x Desktop - KDE 3.2 or Gnome 2.6 (I prefer KDE) File manager Konqueror (if using KDE) Nautilus (if using Gnome) Web browser - Firefox (the browser part of the Mozilla project) (also KDE file manager Konqueror also acts as good web browser) Email - Kmail or Evolution Address book, calendar, PIM Kontact or Evolution KPilot (links to Palms, there are also programs to link Psions and PocketPCs but I have no experience with these) Game - Frozen bubble (simple but addictive game, culturaly neutral, good for winning hearts and minds!) Graphics Digital camera - Digicam Image manipulation - The Gimp Slide show - Pixie Plus or KuickShow CD/DVD burner - K3b Chat program - Kopete Word processor OpenOffice Writer KWord (as this can import pdf files for editing) Spreadsheet - OpenOffice Calc Presentations - OpenOffice Impress Flatbed scanner - Kooka PDF viewer Acrobat Reader (gratis but not open source) Built in pdf viewer in Konqueror file manager HTML Web page creator - Quanta Plus VTC/Voice chat (like NetMeeting) - Gnome Meeting News Reader - KNode Audio Player - XMMS DVD Player - MPlayer (not easy to get these to work 'out of the box' as they need patches to get around the DECSS encryption. Legal in UK and EU not sure about status in US) Remote Desktop connection - built in to KDE or use TightVNC (allows remote administration of computer over network) FTP client - KBear SSH client - Kssh Emacs - powerful file editor that has low overheads for remote administration and does not require graphical desktop. Midnight Commander - File manager (no desktop required) for remote administration. Network utilities - KWiFiManager, KInternet (internet dialup), KFax (sends and receives faxes) Localisation files for target populations (ie help files, menus in native language etc). ------------------ notes: Eric Here is my first cut on the packages to put into the Strong Angel Linux distro. Some general points first: - These packages presume that the target machine is reasonably modern with a reasonable amount of RAM. By this I mean 800MHz or better and at least 125Mb RAM. Linux will run on much older machines perfectly well but would require a lighter weight window manager (such as IceWM). - There are very, very many programs that will do all the tasks listed. It would be very easy to confuse the user with a multitude of similar programs and I think it more important to limit choice (to improve usability) than to provide a multiplicity of choice. - I currently use KDE as my window manager and so my choices reflect this. Gnome is perfectly OK but if this were chosen I would make some changes. - All programs are Open Source except Acrobat Reader (gratis but not FLOSS). - I would be very happy to receive suggestions on alternative programs or ones I have missed out. - Perhaps this email should form the basis of an editable page on your SA Plone site?
